REPOSITORY GUIDE

OpenMAIC on GitHub: a guide to the THU-MAIC repository

The OpenMAIC source code lives in one official repository. This guide points you to it, summarises the license and release history, and maps what is inside so you know where to look before you clone.

Figures read from the GitHub repository on October 4, 2026.

The official repository: github.com/THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC. This site, OpenMAIC.pro, is an independent service and is not part of that repository.

Because the name is popular, searches also surface forks and look-alike repositories. Check that the owner is THU-MAIC before you clone or run anything.

License: MIT, with two notes

OpenMAIC started under AGPL-3.0 and moved to the MIT License with v0.3.0. Older articles still call it AGPL; the LICENSE file in the repository is the authority. The README states that commercial use is permitted free of charge.

  • The root MIT license does not cover every bundled package. packages/mathml2omml is LGPL-3.0-or-later, and packages/pptxgenjs is third-party MIT code.
  • The license covers the software. The models you connect, and the content they generate, fall under your model provider’s terms.

What is inside

The README’s architecture notes describe these main parts:

PartWhat it does
Generation pipelineThe @openmaic/generation package: outline generation, then scene content generation.
Multi-agent orchestrationA LangGraph state machine in lib/orchestration/ that manages agent turns and discussions.
Playback engineA state machine in lib/playback/ that drives classroom playback and live interaction.
Action enginelib/action/ executes 21 action types: speech, whiteboard drawing, text, shapes and charts, spotlight, laser pointer and more.
Agent runtimePostgreSQL-backed sessions for the v1.0.0 agent workbench, with resume and steering, skills, materials and validated course tools.
StorageThe @openmaic/storage package: swappable stores for documents, learner runtime, assets, sessions and materials.

The @openmaic/* SDK family is published to npm, so you can build your own application on the generation, rendering and storage packages rather than forking the whole app.

The OpenMAIC Skill

The skills/openmaic/ folder holds a standard SKILL.md package. It works with OpenClaw and with other agent workbenches such as Codex, DeepSeek and WorkBuddy. With OpenClaw you can generate a classroom from Feishu, Slack, Discord or Telegram without opening a terminal. On OpenClaw it installs from ClawHub:

clawhub install openmaic

In other workbenches, import the skills/openmaic/ folder from the repository. The skill then offers two modes: a hosted mode that uses an access code from the official demo (see Open MAIC Chat explained), and a self-hosted mode that walks you through clone, configuration and start-up, asking for confirmation at each step.

Getting started from the repository

The README’s quick start needs Node.js 22.19 or newer, pnpm 10 or newer and PostgreSQL 16:

git clone https://github.com/THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC.git
cd OpenMAIC
pnpm install

From there you copy the example configuration, add a model API key and start the database and the app. The full sequence, plus the Docker Compose route, is in our OpenMAIC Docker setup guide.

To contribute, the README asks for the usual flow: fork, create a feature branch, commit, push and open a pull request.

Not planning to run code?

The repository is the right place if you want to study, modify or self-host the system. If you only want a lesson, you do not need it: the official demo and the classroom builder on this site both work in a browser. What is OpenMAIC? compares the three routes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the official OpenMAIC GitHub repository?

The official repository is github.com/THU-MAIC/OpenMAIC, published by the THU-MAIC organisation. Copies under other owners are forks or unrelated projects.

What license does OpenMAIC use?

The repository is licensed under the MIT License. It was relicensed from AGPL-3.0 to MIT in v0.3.0 on June 28, 2026. One bundled package, packages/mathml2omml, keeps its own LGPL-3.0-or-later license.

Can I use OpenMAIC commercially?

The README states that the project is MIT-licensed, so commercial use is permitted free of charge. Read the LICENSE file and the third-party component notes in the repository before you redistribute it.

What is the OpenMAIC Skill?

The OpenMAIC Skill is a SKILL.md-format package in the repository’s skills/openmaic folder. It lets agent workbenches such as OpenClaw, Codex, DeepSeek and WorkBuddy set up OpenMAIC and generate classrooms, either against the hosted demo with an access code or against a self-hosted copy.

What is OpenMAIC built with?

The repository is written in TypeScript and uses Next.js 16, React 19, LangGraph 1.1 and Tailwind CSS 4, with PostgreSQL 16 for server-side storage.

Is OpenMAIC.pro part of the GitHub project?

No. OpenMAIC.pro is an independent hosted service inspired by the project. It is not maintained by THU-MAIC and its code is not the upstream repository.

Build a classroom in your browser

No install, no API keys. Describe a topic on OpenMAIC.pro and an AI teacher and AI classmates deliver it as slides, a whiteboard, quizzes, an interactive simulation and a project. One build costs 6 credits, and new accounts start with 6 welcome credits.

OpenMAIC.pro is an independent service inspired by the open-source Open Multi-Agent Interactive Classroom project. It is not operated by or affiliated with THU-MAIC or Tsinghua University, and it is not open.maic.chat. Project facts on this page come from the official repository and paper and can change; check the source before relying on them.
